Re: Vitalise | How To Build A Personal Relationship With God

I started to develop a personal relationship with God after experiencing some trials and difficulties that only He helped me overcome. Although I knew about God, it took a while to really know Him. It’s never enough to just know about God, to be honest you don’t need to experience a tough situation to begin developing a personal relationship with God, you can start right now.

Many of us know all things about Church and Christianity but we still do not have a relationship with God, I would like to guide you through the steps I took as I began to grow closer to God and encourage you that God is looking and waiting for you to build a relationship with Him. God wants to know all His children intimately and that includes you.

What is a Personal Relationship with God?

A personal relationship with God is like a normal relationship with anyone. It is fellowship, love and trust between you and Him. It is much more than going to church or even reading the Bible. We are created to have a relationship with God, it's our primary purpose in life.

Five steps to building a Relationship with God.

  • Spend time with him through Prayer and Reading His Word

If you want to build a personal relationship with God, start by praying and reading his word consistently. This is the most important way to grow practically, no relationship can thrive without intentional communication. God will never force us to spend time with Him. So, we have to want it and actively pursue a relationship with Him.

The thing is, spending time with God will not always feel as exciting as praises in church but think about it as communicating with your significant other or even your friends, it is meaningful to make the effort for the relationships to grow. Quiet time and study time may not always be exciting, but it’s worth it.

  • Talk to God everywhere

You are probably thinking, how can I talk to God everywhere? This pretty much means that you should always have a mindset of prayer and God should always be first in your heart even throughout the day. So, when you have a difficult task to complete, your first thought should be to ask God for help.

God is not far away, the other day, I was short of money and I prayed to God that I required a specific sum of money, less than an hour later as I was standing at the post office, a kind gentleman offered my daughter the exact sum of money I prayed to God for. GOD IS WITH US ALL THE TIME and he wants to hear from us about all things, whether the good, the bad, big or small

  • Build a Relationship with others

It is very important we build our relationship with others as well as building our relationship with God, As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17). We need each other, we need to learn and grow together to help us grow closer to God.

There was a point, my mother used to host bible studies, every Friday, in our house, for our friends, each week we learnt a new scripture and also shared our experiences with God, this allowed us to strengthen in our faith and also grow closer together as a group.

Never underestimate how much a relationship with believers around you can strengthen your personal relationship with God, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ (Mark 12:31).

  • Listen to God’s voice and practice obedience to his Word

A relationship is a two-way street, so while talking to God is important, it is also essential to listen to Him. The truth is, God is always speaking to us but many of us fail to hear Him.

We get distracted by so many things including social media, T.V, our friends and even work.

Its not enough to listen, we should act in obedience when he speaks, the Bible says that those who love God will obey his words ‘If anyone loves me, he will keep my word’ (John 14:23).

Obeying God has a lot to do with trusting Him, when we don’t trust Him, we tend to do the opposite to what he says to. When we don’t trust Him, it’s because we haven’t yet built a deep relationship with Him.

  • Be willing to TRUST Him with your heart

It’s difficult to have a personal relationship with someone you don’t trust but let me tell you this God is very TRUSTWORTHY, you can trust Him with your whole heart and soul, knowing that He will never let you down.

You can trust Him with everything, you can tell Him when you are angry or when you feel sad, when you’ve sinned or fallen short, and be confident he will never turn away from you. God knows how you feel inside, He’s God, He’s not offended by the thoughts of your heart. Let Him help you process them.
