Jesus is pretty clear when He says that a believer must be born again, if they want to see the Kingdom of God.
“Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:3-6
Why do we need to be Born Again?
We are naturally led by our own desires and flesh; this is what guides our thought processes and decisions. But desires of the flesh do not lead to the life of Christ, which is what we are called to. To give in to the desires such as pride, laziness, greed, envy, selfishness and many other forms of evil, leads to sin.
Jesus describes the pre-born-again state as: -
“Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked” Revelations 3:17
When we acknowledge that we are what is described in the verse above, we are at the point where we are ready to be born again.
Nothing that we have as a result of being born in the flesh as a natural person, is capable of serving God. When we acknowledge that we are unable to do good, then God can take over.
We need to surrender everything to be born again- it is the rebirth of the mind and heart. We become dead to the desires of the flesh and alive to the Holy Spirit.
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20 NKJV
Of course, we will still have a flesh that craves fulfilment of our human desires, but now these desires should no longer be able to influence us.
At this point, we should be alive to the Holy Spirit and the guidance of the Spirit.
The life of Jesus should be manifested in our mortal flesh “For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.” 2 Corinthians 4:11 NKJV.
It is because we now have been born of the Spirit and the Holy Spirit resides in us.
It is simply because we have been born of the Spirit and the Spirit lives within us, we have the power to resist temptation and crucify the desires of the flesh and live for Christ.
Colossians 3 is the perfect scripture, with a great description of a born-again believer, starting with:
“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Therefore, put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.
Character of the New Man
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:1-17
You know if you are born again, if you know in your heart that you no longer have carnal/fleshly desires but rather have desires to serve God alone and let him take total control of your life.
A desire to live for eternity than for anything in this world.
“saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done” Luke 22:42

This is your YES "Lord Jesus, thank You for giving Your life for me and forgiving me of my sins so I can have a personal relationship with You. I am sincerely sorry for the mistakes I've made, and I know I need You to help me live right. Your Word says in Romans 10:9, "If you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His Power, authority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." I believe You are the Son of God, and I confess You as my Saviour and Lord. Take me just as I am, and work in my heart, making me the person You want me to be. I want to live for You, Jesus, and I am so grateful to You for giving me a fresh start in my new life with You today. I love you, Jesus!"**
